What are tears? Several physiological roles have been proposed, such as release of toxic or eye protection. However, psychological and social function of emotional tears, those who run down our cheeks when feeling intense joy or sadness, remained unknown. Shani Gelstein, the Weizmann Institute in Israel, and colleagues have shown that they contain a chemical signal that influences sexual behavior.
